The path to renewable fuels could lead straight to brown algae. In fact, they could be a big contribution to the development of large resources of sustainable biomass. This study provides a prospective on the analyses needed for the initial evaluation of the development of brown algae as a biofuel resource. Particular emphasis is placed on the topic of sustainability of the resource itself, despite the primary focus being on its applications for the production of biofuels and the reduction of the costs to produce them.
